Treatment for Excessive Sweating (hyperhidrosis)

By Rachel McIntosh Specialist Nurse Practitioner at Skin & Sanctuary

Now that it’s definitely summer my colleagues asked me to choose the one treatment that either I would like for myself or that I would select for my nearest and dearest. I didn’t hesitate. My choice is definitely our treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Excessive sweating can be a challenging condition to live with. It not only causes physical discomfort but can also have a significant impact on a person's self-esteem and quality of life. It’s great to be able to offer and perform a treatment that has definite results in helping to manage the condition.

Hyperhidrosis, the medical term for excessive sweating, occurs when the sweat glands overreact to stimuli from the body's nervous system. While sweating is a normal bodily function that helps regulate body temperature, individuals with hyperhidrosis experience an overactive response, leading to excessive sweating even in the absence of heat or physical activity.

One popular and effective treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis (sweating affecting the underarms) is the use of injections that temporarily block the chemical responsible for stimulating the sweat glands. By injecting small amounts into the affected area, the overactive sweat glands can be temporarily deactivated, resulting in reduced sweating.

Before receiving treatment for excessive sweating, it is crucial for patients to undergo a full medical consultation with a qualified doctor or nurse prescriber. This consultation serves to ensure that the treatment is safe and suitable for you as an individual, taking into account your overall health and medical history. Every medical professional at Skin and Sanctuary will ask a series of questions related to the patient's health and provide a comprehensive explanation of the treatment process.

The effects of injections for hyperhidrosis typically become noticeable around two weeks after the treatment and can last for four to six months. While the treatment does not provide a permanent solution to hyperhidrosis, it can significantly improve symptoms and enhance the individual's quality of life during its effectiveness. Patients often report a reduction in sweat production, leading to a boost in self-esteem and a renewed sense of confidence.

Again, please remember that it is important to note that injections for hyperhidrosis should only be administered by qualified medical professionals in a clinical setting. This ensures the proper dosage and application technique, minimising the risk of complications or side effects.

But, if this is a worry, and you are feel that the coming, warmer months are not going to help, please remember that this may be an option.
